Ghetto Fm radio station in Pumwani: An Amplified voice for the voiceless. 1.0 Background Today, information dissemination is synonymous with social/economic and political development. It is for this reason that in the agenda for development, information should be categorized to some extent as one of the basic human needs, since it is the light, which guides in seeing through every development process. The most important part of information and advocacy goes down to grassroots level where the majority of the poor population resides. In Kenya for instance, 80% of the population lives in the rural and urban slums where poverty and lack of information and development is the order of the day. As Kenya moves towards information and technology highway in line with the rest of the world, communities and villages in more marginalized rural and urban areas should be on a National information agenda to enable the creation of channels of communication about agriculture, markets, civic education, social justice etc. This will enable sharing of knowledge among villagers by learning from each other’s experiences. 2.0 Why a Community radio? Ghetto FM radio station will therefore create a forum for knowledge sharing, and skills development for the budding radio workers, actors, creative writers and animators as well as musicians. The radio station will be an added channel of information dissemination for SIDAREC after establishment and success of our community magazine “Slum News”. Part of the agenda of the community radio station will be for social development information support. Development information will basically be educative on matters of how to eliminate social evils such as drug abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, ignorance about ones rights, political dominance and oppressive policies and HIV/AIDS pandemic. Generally the station is geared towards building a platform for social justice for slum dwellers. 99.9 Ghetto FM therefore, will create a forum for slum dwellers to ask pertinent questions as well as get them talking to the world about the who, what why, when, where and how their lives, village, families and communities can be enhanced. |
