Community media and ICT initiative

Tuesday, 20 December 2011 19:05

This pillar is charged with the responsibility of creating diverse channels of communication that are responsive to the needs of the community and the dynamic media / ICT environment. These established channels of communication are also used to reach out to the larger youth population within SIDAREC outreach activities. They incorporate emerging technologies as well as other folk media. This is an attempt to speak to the community members and targeted audience in a language that they understand and using a channel a channel that they are familiar with. Similarly, the program aims at ensuring easier access of vital local national and international information that is valuable to poor communities thus bridging the knowledge divide and enabling the poor to understand and participate in National and global human development issues.Puppetry, magnet theater as well as internet, community radio are key components of this pillar.

Strategic activities have therefore been established in response to the needs of the community. These include a Community Libraries with over 6,000 books for school and out of school youth, magnet theater troupes, community radio and puppetry. The pillar also realizes the wide gap between the rich and the poor in terms of computer literacy hence the initiation of basic computer skills training in all SIDAREC RESOURCE CENTERS. Currently over 1,200 young people have graduated in basic computer packages improving their employability.

Entrepreneurship Program

Tuesday, 20 December 2011 19:01

The pillar seeks to improve livelihoods of the potential young entrepreneurs and vulnerable families through supporting and sustaing small business and social enterprises. It is sad to note that, today's small entrepreneur cannot afford specialist / professional services to enhance perfomance in the multiple critic aspects of sales, finance, purchase, personnel etc.

SIDAREC is engaged in continuous business training, counseling and follow-ups, which aim it at instilling business acumen among young people and community members. SIDAREC therefore provides packages that include but not limited to entreprenuerial skills, mentorship, linkages and capital. This Pillar also form a critical part of the organizational incentive packages where young people who volunteer their time in community service are rewarded with competent skills in business management and are also given small financial support to start a micro enterprise

SIDAREC believes that lack of basic education is contributing factor that leads to poverty. Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) plays a very important role in developing a child's intellect and growth.

It lays a strong foundation in preparing the child for primary education. SIDAREC has established ECD schools in two centers (Pumwani & Mukuru) where 300 children aged between 2-6 years are enrolled each year. SIDAREC seeks to compliment the government efforts in upholding and protecting the rights of children, especially the right to early education amongst the poor and educationally disadvantaged communities.
